Round 7 started with a draw as Rybka and Stockfish went 63 moves before adjourning. Presently Critter holds a +1.40 advantage as white in an endgame where Bouquet traded three pawns for white's dark squared bishop. Both engines are in time trouble so it could still go either way. HIARCS and Komodo finally completed their journey back into the top 20 while Houdini battles Deep Junior to try and keep pace with the leaders. The crosstable has been updated and a game from round 7 will be posted tonight once the lead group has played their games
More than half of the games in round 6 are complete and the stage 1 crosstable has been updated with the most recent standings. Pasted below is round 6 win posted by Stockfish over Chiron:

Bouquet vs. Rybka Chiron vs. Stockfish Naum vs. Critter Houdini vs. Strelka Gaviota vs. Spike Gull vs. Protector Arasan vs. Cheng Komodo vs Zappa Engines that can pull out a win instead of settling for a draw will find themselves in prime position for moving on into the top tier group for the next stage with only 3 rounds to go. For those of you who need a refresher, here's what will happen at the end of qualifying: 1) Engines that finish in 1st-20th will be seeded into 4 groups of 5. These groups will form Tier A 2) Engines that finish in 21st - 40th will be seeded into 4 groups of 5. These groups will form Tier B 3) Engines that finish 41st - 46th will be eliminated A PGN from round 6 will be posted tonight. If you would like to see a specific game please comment on this post and let me know your preference otherwise I will use my discretion. After 5 rounds the lead group is beginning to thin out slightly. With just less than half of the games remaining in the qualifying round, only 9 engines sit within a single point of first place. Stockfish and Houdini have rebounded from slow starts to sit in 6th and 7th place respectively while Deep Junior has fallen on hard time since winnings its first 3 games having fallen to 12th after losing its last 2. Surprise leader Chiron finally came down to earth losing its first game of the tournament to Rybka while Bouquet continued its dominance with a win over Deep Junior. Both Bouquet and Rybka sit half a point above the table to share the lead after 5 rounds
Lower in the standings Komodo and HIARCS are still struggling to get out of the bottom tier of qualifying. Making the most of their struggles, engines Cheng and Octochess are continuing to find ways to put points on the board and threaten to make life difficult for the engines below looking to climb over them into the top tier. Ka1 Bg7# 0-1 We're at the halfway point of the inaugural season's qualifying round and we finally have a clear cut leader. Chiron queened two pawns to solidly put away Critter in 75 moves while Deep Junior was bamboozled by Naum in the endgame to lose its first of the tournament. In other games, Bouquet has strung three wins together and now sits tied with Naum with 3.5 points while the drawn heavyweight matchup from round 3 between Houdini and Stockfish has the two favorites sitting 2 points behind the current leader. Further down the table, Komodo, Spike, HIARCS, and DeepSaros sit outside of the top 20 and need to start putting some wins on the board if they're going to qualify for the top tier in stage 2. At the halfway marker of the qualifying round anything is still possible.
Two engine problems have been identified. iCE still reports tablebase hits despite not having tablebases available to it and will be disqualified from the second round should it successfully qualify. RedQueen seems to be playing without thinking leading it to throw all of its pieces away very quickly. While it isn't breaking any rules, it is not putting up a challenge and will be replaced for next season until it gets its act together. Should RedQueen somehow qualify for stage 2, it will be allowed to continue on but given its penchant for losing in 20 moves, such a scenario is unlikely. Here is Chiron's decisive victory over Critter to give it sole control of first place: [Event "[28] UCECL Season 1 - Round 1 - Qualification and Seeding - (12/15/13)"] [Site "Local computer"] [Date "2013.12.19"] [Round "4.1"] [White "Chiron 2 64bit"] [Black "Critter 1.6a 64-bit"] [Result "1-0"] [ECO "B45"] [Opening "Sicilian"] [Variation "Taimanov variation"] 1. e4 c5 2. Qa7# 1-0 While it is still early in the qualifying round, some dominoes are beginning to fall as the lead pack tries to separate itself from the rest of the field. Deep Junior 12.5 maintained a perfect record by beating Komodo 5 in a drawn out 137-move endgame while both Chiron 2 and Critter 1.6a dug in their heels to grind out long wins over their opponents as well. These three engines have sole possession of first place and will be looking to gain a decisive advantage soon as they will no doubt be facing each other head to head in the next few rounds.
Still to come in round 3 of qualifying is the heavyweight match between Stockfish and Houdini. If one engine can manage to pull out a win, it will sit within half a point of the leaders whereas a draw makes both engines' path to the top spot all the more difficult. Rh1# 1-0 Both Naum and Stockfish came through with much needed wins in the 2nd round of Season 1 qualifying putting both engines half a point behind the lead pack. Naum blasted down the e-file with doubled rooks to bludgeon a bewildered Hannibal while Stockfish used tactics to end up a rook ahead of DeepSaros for an easy endgame. There's still plenty of action going on with only 17 second-round games completed and 6 more to go. HIARCS remains the only commercial engine below the top 20 cut-off for qualifying into the top tier for stage 2 group play and no doubt will be looking forward to putting up some solid points against weaker opponents over the next few games. The field is still tightly packed with the top 25 engines currently within a single point of the top spot.

Other highlights from the first round include Hannibal with white holding Stockfish to a draw, Strelka soundly defeating HIARCS, and Glass squandering a +1.63 advantage after 30 moves and eventually losing to a resilient SmarThink. Round 2 has some interesting matches as Deep Saros faces Stockfish and Naum takes on Hannibal with all four engines looking to put some wins on the board and not fall too far off the pace early in the qualifying round.
A problem was identified in the match iCE vs Zappa Mexico II as iCE was somehow accessing Nalimov table bases despite them not being configured in the Aquarium GUI or in the engine configuration. iCE was reinstalled into the GUI and will be monitored for any further violations.
